We also had a member, Marilyn, submit a question:
“I would like to start growing sweet potatoes next summer. Could Gale and Dennis explain more about growing these?”
They were happy to answer Marilyn’s question!
Sweet potatoes need to be started from a none treated sweet potatoes (store potatoes are treated with a growth prohibittor in most cases) We use our leftover potatoes to start new slips. We suggest starting, end of March, beginning of April. By May you should have plenty of slips, then pot up, plant in good deep composted soil. Keep plants warm with grow fabric, till the end of June They like the soil hot. Water, water, fertilize! Once they are planted it takes around 120 days.Keep in mind some places do sell plants, call around.
